New president appointed at Clarke University in Dubuque after interim term

Clarke University in Dubuque has named Fletcher Lamkin as its 17th president, following approval by the university’s board of trustees, the university announced.

Lamkin has served in the role on an interim basis since January 2023 following the departure of President Thom Chesney, who served for three years. Chesney began his new role as president of Southwestern College in New Mexico on July 29.

According to an earlier press release announcing his appointment to the position, Lamkin’s term as interim president would last 18 months, or until a new president is inaugurated who is ready to take office.

“Clarke’s rich history and inspiring mission, vision and values ​​make it a special and unique resource for the region and the state of Iowa,” Lamkin said in a news release. “As president, I believe we can achieve success by collectively leading Clarke’s extraordinary people and providing a strong foundation for student success, financial well-being and stable enrollments.”

According to the press release, in his interim role, Lamkin was involved in developing Clarke University’s 2023-2026 strategic plan and a new capital campaign. He previously served as president of Westminster College in Missouri, West Virginia University and Kansas Wesleyan University.

“With more than 40 years of academic experience across multiple institutions, Fletch brings a unique approach to leadership and service. We are confident he will continue to advance the university’s progress,” said Carolyn Haupert, chair of the Board of Trustees, in the release.
