Family files federal lawsuit against Saline County officials after 2022 death on I-30

The family of Daniel Barajas, who was struck by vehicles on I-30 in 2022, has filed a lawsuit against several Saline County officials.

U.S. District Court Judge James M. Moody filed the initial scheduling order in Barajas v. Saline County, et al., proposing a jury trial to be held sometime during the week of August 4, 2025, at the Richard Sheppard Arnold United States Courthouse in Little Rock. On May 2, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas issued subpoenas to several Saline County officials charged in the 2022 death of Daniel Barajas. Barajas was killed after being struck by three vehicles on Interstate 30 in Saline County following an interaction with several Saline County sheriff’s deputies. The lawsuit names Saline County officials, Sheriff Rodney Wright, Saline County Coroner Kevin Cleghorn, Deputy Coroner R. Allyn West, Officer Tim Bragg, members of the Turtle Creek Fire Department, SCSO employees (at the time) Hunter Thompson, Sullivan Sulzberger, Christy Biddle, Kate Hawthorn, Harley Sowell, Jake Scoggins and Joe Shamlin. Bragg and Chris Jarvis are the TCFD members named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit names Jay McCallister, who was an Arkansas State Trooper with the rank of sergeant and was the ASP supervisor at the scene of Daniel’s death.
