New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox discuss trade for top player on MLB market

Teams looking to make moves are running out of time before today’s MLB trade deadline ends at 6 p.m. ET. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have both made roster moves, but signs indicate neither team is quite done yet.

The latest trade rumors in MLB suggest that the two AL East division rivals may be in talks with the Los Angeles Angels for a trade for the same player.

Luis Rengifo and Taylor Ward mentioned as possible trade targets for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox

MLB trade rumors are flying ahead of today’s deadline. Now, MLB Network insider Jon Morosi is throwing even more of a spanner in the works.

According to Morosi, the Los Angeles Angels could “move” Luis Rengifo and/or Taylor Ward today. So far, the known teams that have contacted the Angels are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rengifo has had three consecutive productive seasons and has an OPS+ of 109 since 2022. An added benefit of acquiring Rengifo is that he will remain arbitration-eligible after the off-season and won’t be a free agent until 2026.

An infielder who is comfortable at third base, shortstop and second base, Rengifo is considered one of the best hitters available at the deadline. At 27, it’s probably best for the Angels to capitalize on his rising trade value now.

Taylor Ward’s situation is a little different. He’s under contract until 2027. But at 30, it makes more sense to help him become a contender now than wait until the Angels are competitive again. He’s also not having nearly as strong a season as Rengifo.

Still, Ward could be a valuable addition to a team looking for a right-handed hitter with some outfield power, and he’s essential for a playoff spot. But for an Angels team that’s nowhere near a winning team, he’s worthless.
