A woman has been charged after fatally stabbing her wife and attacking her mother-in-law with a samurai sword, prosecutors in California said.

Weichien Huang, 45, was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the sword attack, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a July 29 news release.

Prosecutors also accused Huang of “causing serious bodily harm to a person 70 years of age or older” and using a sword in the attacks.

“We are deeply saddened by this horrific act of violence and our hearts go out to the victims’ loved ones and communities,” District Attorney George Gascón said in the release. “This tragic case highlights the creeping problem of domestic violence that affects so many in our country.”

Huang and her wife, later identified by the coroner as 47-year-old Chen Chen Fei, had an argument at their San Dimas home on July 18, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported, City News Service reported.

Armed with a katana sword, Huang attacked both her wife and mother-in-law, prosecutors said.

Fei died at the scene, officers said in a press release.

Fei’s injured mother, however, managed to grab the sword from Huang and ran outside, officers said, the Los Angeles Times reported.

She was “hospitalized with serious injuries,” prosecutors said.

Huang was also hospitalized but was detained again six days later, prosecutors said.

Online jail records show she is being held without bail.

If Huang is found guilty on all charges, he could face life in prison, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said officers are continuing to investigate the case.
