Former Iowa State basketball players shine in first games of 2024 Olympics

Men’s and women’s basketball at the 2024 Olympic Games have begun and former Iowa State players have already made an impression on the world stage.

ISU has seven alumni who play for various basketball teams. While not all of them make significant contributions, several former Cyclones stars played important roles in the opening weekend.

Here are some of the top performances:

Bridget Carleton shines in Canada vs. France showdown

Although the Canadian women’s basketball team lost 75-54 to France on Monday, it wasn’t Carleton’s fault.

The former Cyclone was arguably her team’s second-best player, posting a stat line of eight points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes as a starter, the most minutes on the team.

But her team struggled on the court, shooting just 32.1% from the floor. Canada was also outscored 23-2 in the second quarter.

However, Carleton and Canada are not done yet. They will take the field again on Thursday, August 1, against Australia.

Marial Shayok shines in South Sudan’s win over Puerto Rico

Shayok has proven to be a key link for South Sudan during these Olympic Games and played a vital role in the team’s 90-79 victory over Puerto Rico last Sunday.

In the 23rd minute as a starter, Shayok scored 15 points and grabbed three rebounds on 5 of 10 shooting.

South Sudan plays Team USA on Wednesday and Serbia on Saturday, August 3.

Nick Weiler-Babb helps Germany dominate Japan

The German men’s basketball team defeated Japan 97-77 on Saturday thanks to a great second half.

Weiler-Babb was in the mix off the bench with five points and two steals in 19 minutes. He shot 2-for-3 from the field with a made triple, but collected four fouls.

Germany will play Brazil again on Tuesday and will face France on Friday.

George Conditt IV is perfect off the field for Puerto Rico against South Sudan

Despite the Puerto Rican men’s basketball team’s 90-79 loss to South Sudan on Sunday, plagued by a poor second half, former Cyclone Conditt IV was exceptionally efficient.

He shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field to tally 13 and six rebounds in 25 minutes as a starter, but was just 1-for-5 at the free-throw line.

Puerto Rico plays Serbia on Wednesday and takes on Team USA on Saturday.
