11,000 pounds of animal feed donated to Mokenas NAWS

MOKENA, IL — Mokena’s NAWS has received 11,000 pounds of animal feed from a Plainfield company.

On Friday, July 19, TR Miller Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing donated 5,000 pounds of pet food to the animal shelter. This was just the first half of the total donation.

In April, TR Miller announced a food drive. For every $89 the company spent on an air conditioning service between April 15 and July 31, the company would add 10 pounds of pet food.

The donation is important to the company’s owners, brothers Brian and Jim Sloan, whose mother regularly volunteered at local animal shelters until her death last year after battling cancer.

“My brother and I always joked that our mother loved animals more than people, so I don’t think there’s a better way to honor her legacy than by partnering with NAWS,” said Brian Sloan, owner of TR Miller.

The £11,000 raised was such a large donation that NAWS cannot store it all, and the remaining £6,000 will be distributed as needed. In addition to the donation, a team of 15 TR Miller team members and family spent a Saturday volunteering at NAWS.

Between their facility and foster network, NAWS has nearly 900 cats and dogs in their program. They are 100 percent no-kill, and many of their animals are rescued from euthanizing shelters in the region.

“This whole partnership with TR Miller has been really beneficial for us because keeping costs down is a big thing for nonprofits and food is a big thing,” said Becca Keller, Director of Development at NAWS. “It’s so important to keep the animals fed and thriving until they get to their new home.”

TR Miller and NAWS plan to continue the program into the future.
