Norah O’Donnell will step down as anchor of the CBS Evening News after the presidential election, she announced Tuesday.

O’Donnell has been the news’ lead anchor for five years, and before that she hosted the network’s morning show. She told CBS News colleagues in an email that it’s time to do something different after spending time “tied to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle.”

She said she will remain at CBS News to write interviews and other stories, but in a role that has not yet been fully defined. CBS says it is committed to continuing the broadcast, but gave no indication of who will replace her.

The CBS Evening News, the station from which Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather operated for many years, generally ranks third in the ratings, behind ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir and NBC’s Nightly News with Lester Holt.
