‘Mass migration has destroyed the Britain I knew’

Award-winning historian Dr David Starkey has bemoaned the current state of affairs in Britain, claiming it has been “destroyed” by Tony Blair and New Labour.

He spoke to Steve Edginton of GB News about the former prime minister’s legacy. According to Starkey, many elements of Blair’s ten-year tenure are still visible today.

Migration in particular, which increased sharply in the years after Blair took office in 1997.

Starkey said immigration policies had destroyed the British economy and he railed against New Labour.

“The Britain I grew up in was the most peaceful, gentle, homogeneous society that has ever existed,” he said.

“We didn’t need ID cards. We had extraordinarily low levels of crime. We had such a high level of public trust.

“That has been destroyed. It has been deliberately destroyed by Tony Blair and New Labour with this absurd idea that they would force us to become multi-ethnic for good.

“They went and rubbed the whites’ noses and dirt. We have to understand that it is an act of such unimaginable national self-harm.”

Starkey worries that Britain, now under a Labour government for the first time since the Blair years, will once again go through a period of transition.

“Keir Starmer represents an intensely authoritarian character,” he said.

“People get very confused because Starmer was a human rights lawyer. They think he’s kind of soft and cuddly.

“Human rights are really nice, aren’t they? But what we have to remember is that the kind of human rights that Starmer represents are the rights of minorities only.

“This is the scary thing. Democracy has been turned upside down. Democracy means the rule of the majority.

“It’s not completely the other way around and it doesn’t mean you have to protect every exotic minority you can think of from the majority.”

Starmer is under pressure to provide clarity on how Labour plans to stop dangerous crossings of the Channel by illegal migrants.

The prime minister said during the election campaign that his government will aim to “destroy the gangs”.

The previous government’s idea of sending migrants to Rwanda was dismissed within hours of Starmer taking office, after he repeatedly called it a “gimmick”.

A new Border Security Command is to be launched, with the government pledging millions of pounds in funding.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We all want to see an end to dangerous small boat crossings, which undermine border security and put lives at risk.

“The new government is taking steps to improve our border security. We are creating a new Border Security Command, bringing together our intelligence and law enforcement agencies. We are getting new counter-terrorism powers and hundreds of staff in the UK and abroad. Together we will tackle the criminal smuggling gangs that are making millions in profits.”
