Bills DC Bobby Babich is expected to call the plays in Saturday’s season opener against the Bears

Bills Mafia won’t just get to see quarterback Josh Allen and the rest of the Buffalo Bills starters play at least a quarter in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. They’ll also get a taste of what the defense will look like with new Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich calling the plays.

However, head coach Sean McDermott did say he would “take it from there” after Saturday’s game, and indicated that Babich may not be the one leading the defense once the regular season begins.

Still, this is progress. After calling on the defense on top of the usual head coaching responsibilities for the entire 2023-24 season, this feels like a breath of fresh air. And who knows? Maybe Babich impresses McDermott enough that he gets the nod for other opportunities down the road.

It’s also worth noting that Babich indicated at Monday’s press conference that he plans to be in the coaching box this season. That certainly provides insight into who will be directing the defensive play.
