On July 17, officers located and arrested McCarthy during a traffic stop after discovering that the Ford F150 she was driving had been reported stolen from a local Enterprise Rent-A-Car. She was taken into custody and charged with possession of stolen property.

The UCSO was contacted by the Department of Homeland Security after learning of the arrest, who reported that McCarthy and her husband, Boswell, were allegedly part of a transnational criminal organization wanted for defrauding victims of more than £3 million. Further investigation by the two agencies resulted in the location and arrest of Boswell and other members of the organization in Ulster County.
