CBI teams up with counter-terrorism agency Interpol to bring back wanted terrorist from UAE

It is alleged that Singh also helped channel terror funds through various routes

New Delhi:

The CBI has worked with the NIA and Interpol to bring back Babbar Khalistan International terrorist Tarsem Singh, wanted in connection with an RPG attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence headquarters in Mohali and other terror cases, officials said on Friday.

Singh, who was facing an Interpol Red Notice, was brought back from Abu Dhabi by an NIA security mission and was arrested on Friday morning after reaching Delhi, they said.

“The said Red Notice Subject is wanted by the NIA for terrorist offences and financing of terrorist activities. The CBI received a Red Notice against him from the Interpol General Secretariat on 13th November 2023, on the request of the NIA. The Red Notice was circulated to all Interpol member countries for the location and arrest of the suspect,” a CBI spokesperson said.

Singh, the brother of designated terrorist Lakhbir Landa, is a senior member of the terrorist organisation Babbar Khalistan International (BKI) and a major terror hub of designated terrorists Rinda and Landa in the UAE, officials said.

He was wanted for, among other things, the RPG attack on Punjab police in Mohali in May 2022.

He was arrested by Interpol in Abu Dhabi in November 2023 and extradited on Friday.

Singh was actively involved in arranging and providing terror funds to India-based associates of Harwinder Sandhu alias Rinda and Lakhbir Singh alias Landa.

It is alleged that Singh also helped channel terrorist funds through various routes.

The NIA had arrested him on August 20, 2022, in connection with terrorist activities of leaders/members of banned terrorist organisations such as Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), BKI and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), who together have created a vast network of terrorist organisations across India.

“These organizations work through agents/members of terrorist organizations and organized criminal gangs to smuggle weapons, ammunition, explosives and IEDs across the border.

“They are using drug trafficking, extortion and hawala trade to generate money for terrorist activities on Indian soil, NIA investigations so far have revealed,” an official said.
