Detectives arrest suspected bhang trader ‘Mathee wa Ngara’ in Kiambu

Nancy Kigunzu, better known as Mathee wa Ngara, was arrested along with two others by police in Nairobi on Friday on suspicion of drug trafficking.

According to the National Police Service, officers of the Kigungu Transnational Organized Crime Unit arrested Christopher Odipo Ochieng and David Ochieng Okoth, both from Homabay, in Juja, Kiambu County, where they were found in possession of “seven jute bags containing bhang weighing approximately 300kg, as well as various processed bhang products including bhang sticks”.

At the time of their arrest, Odipo and Okoth were said to have taken five gunny bags of bhang to Mathee Wa Ngara. When Kigungu realised that detectives were following them, she managed to flee before the police later caught up with her at Georgina Apartments, where she had taken refuge.

“This led to further searches of the premises, resulting in the seizure of various bhang products and documents related to its activities, including proceeds of money laundering, among others,” police said in a statement.

According to police, property deeds, vehicle registration books and various currencies, including 100,000 Kenyan shillings in cash, were recovered during the investigation at the crime scene.

“In addition, three other motor vehicles were seized during the raid by officers of the Transnational Organized Crime Unit as they are considered proceeds of crime. The crime scene was subsequently processed and documented by the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU),” the statement said.

The three are currently at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi and are expected to appear in court on Monday.
