Calgary man arrested for alleged sexual assault of 14-year-old girl

A Calgary man is facing charges after allegedly luring and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl earlier this year.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) launched an investigation in January 2024 after reports that a man was using social media to lure a girl.

Investigators allege the suspect used an online app to coerce the victim into sending sexually explicit photos. Police believe the online conversation lasted several months and led to an in-person meeting between the two, during which the 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually abused.

According to police, the victim’s mother discovered what had happened when she looked at her daughter’s phone.

“This is just one example of why it’s important for parents to know what their kids are doing online, who they’re talking to, and what apps they’re using,” said ALERT ICE Const. Heather Bangle. “As a parent, you have every right to keep an eye on your kids and make sure they’re safe.”

The suspect was arrested at his home with the assistance of Calgary police and the RCMP. Investigators have since learned that the suspect was communicating with a second victim.

Steven Meier-Araya, 22, faces multiple charges, including multiple counts of luring a child, one count of sexual abuse and multiple counts of child pornography.

The suspect was released on court-imposed conditions and will appear in court again later this month.
