More details released in fatal officer-involved shooting in Auburn – Finger Lakes Daily News

2:15 PM Update:

More information has become available about the officer-involved shooting that took place Thursday in the city of Auburn.

Auburn Police Chief James Slayton, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci and Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck were at the DA’s office Friday afternoon to provide more details about the Thursday night incident that left one man dead.

According to police, around 8 p.m., people arrived at Melone Village for an investigation into child sexual exploitation.

It was during this time that Scott Demonte made contact with officers. Outside the apartment, the 51-year-old Fayetville man brandished a handgun and pointed it at officers before turning the gun on himself and shooting himself in the head.

Officers attempted to revive him before he was taken to hospital, but Demonte died from his injuries.

According to Police Chief Slayton, the crime scene was cleared shortly after 2 a.m.

During the incident, an Auburn police officer fired one round in the direction of Demonte; however, at this stage of the investigation, it is not believed the bullet hit him. Sheriff Schenck added that the bullet has been recovered.

Chief Slayton stated that in accordance with department policy, the officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The ongoing investigation is being led by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the New York State Police and the New York State Attorney General’s Office. The Auburn Police Department is assisting.

Sheriff Schenck said his office is reviewing a large amount of evidence as part of the investigation, including footage from officers’ body cameras.

As for a specific timeline of events, the sheriff could not go into detail at this time, but said, “The whole situation unfolded very quickly. It was very dynamic.”

Because Malone Village is densely populated and has many families, Chief Slayton said the department is working with schools to provide assistance to children who may have witnessed the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Nicole Stewart at 315-294-8093. Information can also be shared anonymously through the sheriff’s website or the Safer Watch app by clicking here.

More information will follow later.
