Learn to Mountain Bike: The members of Lakes Area Mountain Bike Alliance and Trails (LAMBAT) will host a free “Learn to Mountain Bike” event at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, 29409 170th St., Detroit Lakes, starting at 9 a.m. Open to all who are interested in learning to ride.

Rotary Peach Sale: The Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary will wrap up their 25th Annual Peach Sale under the big tent at Nereson’s in Detroit Lakes, with Rotarians on hand to assist customers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until peaches are gone). Costs have gone up slightly, to $42 for a full lug and $26 for a half lug.

Weiner Dog Nationals: The community of Vergas will once again host wiener dog racing as part of its Looney Days festivities, with registration starting at 8 a.m. and the first race at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $15 per dog, with a $25-per-family maximum for multiple Dachsunds. All dogs must be checked in by 8:30 a.m. Sign your dog up online at cityofvergas.com to reserve your spot in the competition. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, so if you’re not entered in the competition, be sure to come cheer on your favorites!

Becker County Fair Tractor Parade: The 15th Annual Becker County Fair Tractor Parade will depart at 10:30 a.m. from Adkins Equipment in Detroit Lakes, heading south on Richwood Road to Roosevelt Avenue, continuing south before turning west onto Willow Street and continuing to Rossman Avenue, where it will turn south and head into the Becker County Fairgrounds. Before the parade starts, tractor drivers are invited to an 8:30 a.m. breakfast at Adkins Equipment. After parking on the fairgrounds, tractor drivers are invited to the fair and tractor awards ceremony under the Big Tent at 11:30 a.m., and can also enjoy lunch at the 4-H Stand before heading back out. Becker County Fair Family Day: The 2024 Becker County Fair concludes at the fairgrounds on Rossman Avenue in Detroit Lakes. The Livestock Auction Bidders Breakfast at the 4-H Stand starts at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Showmanship Contest at Amanda Foltz Arena at 8:30 a.m. 4-H and FFA Market Livestock Auction starts at 9 a.m. in Amanda Foltz Arena, and the 4-H Food Stand will open to the public at 8:30 a.m. The Tractor Parade will be arriving at the fairgrounds in time for the Fair and Tractor Awards program under the Big Tent at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Retro Cowboys at 1 p.m., which is also when the carnival midway opens. Bingo starts at 3 p.m., and the final night of demolition derby action starts at 7 p.m. over at the grandstand. There will also be a 4-H Dance at Amanda Foltz Arena starting at 7 p.m., and the final button drawing of this year’s fair will take place under the Big Tent at 9:45 p.m. A full schedule is available online at beckercountyfair.com.

Veterans Honor Flight Fundraiser: Come to Detroit Lakes American Legion Post 15 (810 West Lake Drive) from 3-8 p.m. and support the Veterans Honor Flight of North Dakota and Minnesota at their fundraiser, which will include a barbecue supper, music, yard games and a silent auction. Open to the public.

Trivia Night: Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detroit Lakes (824 Washington Ave.) will host a special “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon”-themed trivia night, presented by Trivia Mafia, starting at 7 p.m. Winners will receive a fun prize along with the honor of being crowned as the ultimate GOT/HOD fan.

Art and Craft Affair: The Art of the Lakes Association invites lakes area residents to Railroad Park, located at the intersection of State Hwy. 78 and County Rd. 83 in Battle Lake, for its annual Art and Craft Affair, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The mission of the Art and Craft Affair is to offer display vendors an opportunity to market creative, handmade, original arts and crafts, and to offer fairgoers, of all ages and economic status, an opportunity to enjoy the event and discover items of interest for purchase. JJ’s Hog Roast for Hospice: The 9th Annual JJ’s Hog Roast for Hospice will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 51943 County Hwy. 49, Pelican Rapids, near Pelican Lake. VFW Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast: Come support the local VFW Auxiliary and their veterans programs by attending their monthly breakfast fundraiser at VFW Post 1676, 500 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes. Menu is pancakes, sausage and eggs or biscuits and sausage gravy, with a choice of juice or coffee, all for a donation of $7. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pastor Wade Dutton Retirement Celebration: Please join the congregation at Cormorant Lutheran Church from 12-3 p.m. to celebrate the retirement of Pastor Wade Dutton after 40 years in ministry. Tamarac Sunday Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, nature-themed movie, “Born in the Rockies, Part 2: Growing Up,” will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Tamarac History Talk and Driving Tour: Join refuge volunteers and history buffs John Hovdenes and Del Bergseth at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge Discovery Center at 2 p.m. for a fun and informative tour that explores Tamarac’s past. Before the refuge was established, this landscape was extensively settled. Who were these folks? Where did they live and how did they survive in this wilderness? What role did the CCC play in refuge development? The presentation in the Discovery Center will be followed by a caravan tour to several historical sites. Pitch 412 Live Pitch Competition: Project 412’s live entrepreneurial pitch competition, Pitch 412, will take place at 6 p.m. in the conference center at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Finalists Connor Camrud, Barb Owen-Boerger, Jon Melgaard, and siblings Timmie, Lillie and Landon Hansen will be pitching their ideas for Cubed Therapy, Getaway Kimonos, Event Conex, and Lillie’s Lollipops, respectively, in this “Shark Tank”-like live competition, where participants can earn cash prizes and industry recognition. Sons of Norway: The Sons of Norway Vikingland Lodge 1-495 will hold their monthly board meeting at 5 p.m., followed by the lodge meeting at 6 p.m., all in the Detroit Lakes City Park. Book Bike Storytime: The Becker County Museum in Detroit Lakes (714 Summit Ave.) will host a visit from the Detroit Lakes Public Library’s Book Bike for a special 10:30 a.m. Storytime session, with activities and free books. There is no museum admission fee for this special event, which is open to the public.

Detroit Lakes NARFE: The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Detroit Lakes Chapter 1842 will meet at noon in the Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn for lunch from the menu, followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m. Open to all past and present federal employees.

Defensive Driving Class: A four-hour, in-person defensive driving class will take place from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham (805 West Main St.). All classes are now four hours; the eight-hour class is no longer required for new participants, as of July 1. Cost is $20 per person. Women’s Wednesday at Forest Edge: All area women — and men, despite the name — are invited to come to Forest Edge Gallery in rural Vergas from 3-5 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, June through August, for some live music, refreshing beverages (both alcoholic and not), artist demonstrations in the yard, and of course, the opportunity to explore all of the indoor and outdoor art displays at Forest Edge. This month’s event will feature music from Frank Weible and David Ferreira.

Learn to Skate: Beginner skaters are invited to Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for a free “Learn to Skate” class. Meet Author Douglas Dorow: The Detroit Lakes Public Library at 1000 Washington Ave. will host a visit by “The Ninth District” author Douglas Dorow from 4 to 5 p.m. Fans of true crime and thrillers will enjoy listening to Dorow talk about his writing process, where he gets his ideas, and his latest book series about the FBI, set in Minneapolis. Dorow is an award-winning short story author who lives in Minneapolis.

Burger and Comedy Night: Al’s Bar and Grill, located at the Audubon Liquor Store (445 Main St., Audubon), will host a night of cheeseburgers and comedy featuring comedian Rio Hillman, starting at 8 p.m. No cover charge, but admission is limited to those age 21 and up.

William Kent Krueger Book Tour: Award-winning Minnesota author William Kent Krueger will be stopping by three area bookstores today as part of a regional book tour promoting his latest release in the Cork O’Connor mystery series, “Spirit Crossing.” Presentations will take place at 12:30 p.m., Big Pine Books, Perham; 2:30 p.m., Bluebird Books, Detroit Lakes (this is a ticketed event; your pre-order purchase of the book, either in the store or online, will be your ticket); and 5 p.m. at the The Event Room in Park Rapids, presented by Beagle and Wolf Books and Bindery (this is a ticketed event; tickets are $35 and include a signed copy of the book).

New York Mills Corn Feed: Free, freshly prepared corn-on-the-cob will be served at the New York Mills VFW prior to the Kalevala Puppet Pageant (see below), from 4 to 7 p.m. (or until the corn runs out). Kalevala Puppet Pageant: The first of two public performances of the 15th Annual Kalevala Puppet Pageant will take place at the New York Mills VFW, starting at 7 p.m. The Puppet Pageant is an original play that was created based on characters and tales from the Kalevala, the Finnish book of legends, brought to life by local community members through larger-than-life puppet costumes, stilt-walking, songs, and music. Young Life Triathlon: The annual Young Life Triathlon gets underway at 8 a.m. in Detroit Lakes’ City Park. Participants can choose from Sprint (500-meter swim, 12.4-mile bike ride, 2.92-mile run), Olympic (1.5-kilometer swim, 40k bike ride, 10K run), Relay (use Sprint or Olympic course, but with different people doing each leg) and Paddleboard/Kayak (paddle or kayak 2K in lieu of swim, then do either the Sprint or Olympic distances for the bike ride and run) divisions, Tri-athlete check-in starts at 6:30 a.m., with a mandatory pre-race meeting at 7:40 a.m. on the City Beach — which is where the swim/board/kayak leg starts for all competitors, followed by the bike ride and run. Cormorant Daze: The village of Cormorant will host its annual Cormorant Daze summer festival, starting with the Cormorant Lions pancake feed from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Cormorant Community Center. Frazee Rescue Pancake Feed: A pancake feed fundraiser and open house will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Frazee Rescue, 601 Birch Ave. West, Frazee. Pancakes will be served with sausage, coffee and orange juice, all for a free will donation. Open to the public.

Artisans For Animals: The Marshmallow Animal Shelter and Boarding Facility, located at 1478 Mallard St., Detroit Lakes, will be hosting “Artisans for Animals: A Furry Fundraiser,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of vendors will be present, and there will be a silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the shelter. Genealogy Work Session: Your library offers free access to a number of popular genealogy research tools, including Ancestry.com (Library Edition), FamilySearch, ProQuest and the Minnesota Digital Library. If you’re interested in exploring these tools with a little assistance, join the Detroit Lakes Public Library for this 1 p.m. work session, which will allow you to access these tools with a library staff member on hand to answer questions as they come up. This two-hour program facilitated by library staff is being offered free of charge, but registration is required. Tuesday Afternoon Book Club: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will host a 3 p.m. gathering of the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club in its main meeting room. This month’s book, “The Island of Missing Trees” by Elif Shafak, follows protagonist Ada as she tries to find her place in the world while uncovering her family’s history. Becker County Fair: The 2024 Becker County Fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 7 through Saturday, Aug. 10 at the fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes. Carnival ride specials are offered at the midway daily, including armband discounts for donations to the Becker County Food Pantry on Wednesday and Friday. Livestock will be released after 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, and must be removed from the barns by 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11. Vergas Looney Days: The Vergas Community Club will host its 2024 Looney Days festival through Sunday, Aug. 11, featuring everything from rummage sales, live music and food trucks to a loon calling contest, water ski show, Road Rally Scavenger Hunt and street dance on Saturday, as well as a classic car show, Grand Parade, water fights and more live music on Sunday. Pine to Palm Golf Tournament: Since 1931, the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes has been home to one of the oldest and most prestigious golf tournaments in the state of Minnesota, the Pine to Palm. Held every year on the second weekend in August, the tournament attracts 450-plus golfers from around the region to compete in five different divisions. Pine Point Pow Wow: The Pine Point Community Council welcomes the public to the annual Pine Point Pow Wow, which concludes Sunday, Aug. 11 at the pow wow grounds in Pine Point. Saturday’s events begin with the Joe Bush 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m., followed by the flag raising at 10 a.m. and grand entries at both 1 and 7 p.m., with a community feast in between at 5 p.m. The weekend concludes with a final 1 p.m. grand entry on Sunday.

Wolf Lake Harvest Festival: The community of Wolf Lake in southeastern Becker County wiill celebrate its 41st annual Harvest Festival on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17. The festivities begin with the Miss Wolf Lake Pageant at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and continue on Saturday with a vendor fair and farmer’s market, a 5K walk/run, car show, obstacle course, kids’ games and pedal tractor pull, parade, mud run and last but not least, an 8 p.m. street dance featuring music by Whiskey Business. Perham Pioneer Fest: The 53rd Annual Perham Pioneer Fest takes place on Aug. 17-18 at the Pioneer Village, 1251 1st Ave. North, Perham. Gates open at 8 a.m. on both days, with events continuing until 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18. Admission is a free will donation ($5 per adult suggested). Scheduled events include an antique tractor pull on Saturday at 1 p.m. (registration starts at 11 a.m.); live music from the Pat Fink Band on Saturday, 6-10 p.m. in the Grandview Heights Ballroom; and a kids’ pedal tractor pull at 12:30 p.m. Sunday (free registration for kids ages 4-11 starts at noon). Other festivities include antique tractor and gas engine displays, saw mill and shingle mill demonstrations, threshing demonstrations and a flea market. Finn Creek Summer Folk Festival: The Finn Creek Open Air Museum in rural New York Mills will host its annual Summer Folk Festival on Aug. 17-18. The crafter’s, vendors’ and farmer’s markets will be open all day Saturday and Sunday, along with the petting barn, and breakfast will be served starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Kalevala Puppet Pageant will be presented at noon on Saturday, and there will also be historical re-enactments, tractor pulls for kids and adults, live music, a Molkky tournament, Finnish and American-style activities for kids and adults, raffle prize drawings and more. Fridays in Frazee: Local families are invited to bring the kids out to downtown Frazee every Friday this summer, June through August, for some free, family-friendly activities from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Activities will include yard games, music, bouncy houses (including a wet slide) treats and more. Hornet Pride Picnics: Come show your Hornet Pride every Wednesday this summer, through Aug. 28, as Frazee’s United Community Bank serves up a hot dog lunch (with chips) on Main Avenue from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free will donations will go to support Frazee-Vergas athletics and arts programming.

Sunshine Storytime: Join the Detroit Lakes Public Library staff at the City Park Bandshell every Thursday this summer at 10:30 a.m. for some fun in the sun, with stories and craft activities. This event will be moved to the library at 1000 Washington Ave. in case of inclement weather.

Tuesdays in the Park: Every Tuesday night from June through August, starting June 4, Fuller Center for Housing will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, beans, potato salad and beverages in the Detroit Lakes City Park from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; cost is a free will donation. Following the meal, live music begins at 7 p.m. under the bandshell and lasts for approximately an hour, though some performers do continue to play a little later into the evening. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, as bench seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, both the picnic and the concert will be moved inside the Pavilion. Trucks and Tunes: Project 412’s summer music series returns to the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell, with bands playing every Friday from 5-8 p.m. through Aug. 23 (except June 28, July 19 and Aug. 2, when there are other music events happening in the community). There will also be a variety of food and beverage trucks parked around the bandshell for the crowd to check out. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for comfortable seating. In case of rain, both the food trucks and the music will move to downtown Detroit Lakes, with the trucks being parked along Washington Avenue outside Bucks Mill Brewing, which is the alternate rain site for the concerts.

Wild Wednesdays: Every Wednesday through Aug. 28, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge will be offering “Wild Wednesdays” at 10 a.m. Explore the world of nature with your child during this hour-long adventure designed for 3-7-year-olds. Listen to a story, go for a hike, make a craft. There’s a different topic every week! Space is limited to 30 kids per session, so pre-registration required for these free programs. Master Gardening Clinics: The Becker County Master Gardeners will host their weekly Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics, every Wednesday from May through September, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the local University of Minnesota Extension Office, which is located at 1120 8th St. SE in Detroit Lakes. Bring your plant, pest, disease or gardening questions to them for helpful solutions and ideas. Samples would be helpful for answering specific questions. Sleeping Bags Needed: The Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus in Detroit Lakes are collecting sleeping bags for distribution to those in need. Anyone who has a new or used, functional sleeping bag (i.e., the zipper works) can drop them off at the Becker County Food Pantry, 610 Terry St., Detroit Lakes, anytime between 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Holmes Art Cellar Open Studio: Come join members of the Holmes Artist Collective at the Art Cellar every Thursday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Work on a project, start something new, or just come to spend some time with area artists. Various art events will also be scheduled during this time throughout the year; suggestions for activities or other ideas to include are welcome. Free and open to all; no need to pre-register. This open studio is also held concurrently with monthly meetings of the Holmes Artist Collective, which take place on the second Thursday of every month.

Life Drawing Open Studio: Life drawing, also sometimes known as figure drawing or gesture drawing, is the drawing of the human form in various poses and levels of detail. Join Holmes Artist Collective facilitators in the Holmes Art Cellar every Friday morning from 10-11:30 a.m. through the end of 2024 for some networking and creativity. Open to artists of all skill levels; all media welcome, but you will need to bring your own supplies. No cost to attend, and no registration necessary. The Holmes Art Cellar is located in the basement of the Historic Holmes Theatre at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Grace Cafe: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be serving lunch every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. The lunch is open to all in the Detroit Lakes area; admission is a free-will donation. Guests are welcome to stay after the meal to play games or cards.

Grace Food Pantry: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be operating a food pantry during its regular office hours, 9 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday. Anyone in need can come in and pick up some food. Donations will also be accepted.

Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday this summer in Detroit Lakes’ Peoples Park from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., starting May 18. Come shop with your favorite returning vendors, or discover some new ones, until 1 p.m. Vendors accept EBT cards and food checks to be used for fresh fruit and vegetables.
