Harris vows tougher border security

Less than 200 miles from the southern border, Vice President Kamala Harris vowed to fight for “strong border security” and took aim at Donald Trump for striking down immigration legislation that would have curtailed asylum policies, promising to sign such a bill into law if he were elected.

“I was attorney general of a border state. I went after the transnational gangs, the drug cartels, the human traffickers,” Harris said, touching on a subject she rarely discusses at length. “I prosecuted them in case after case and I won, so I know what I’m talking about.”

Speaking to a crowd of more than 15,000 supporters at Desert Diamond Arena, Harris blamed Trump for Congress’ failure to pass a bipartisan border deal earlier this year. “He talks a lot about border security, but he doesn’t do it,” Harris told a raucous crowd in the Sun Belt.

“We know our immigration system is broken, and we know what it will take to fix it: comprehensive reform. That includes strong border security and an earned path to citizenship,” Harris said.

Comprehensive reforms don’t get tougher, they give amnesty in some form, and that border law didn’t do much to stop illegal immigration. Rewarding illegals for coming illegally/overstaying their visas doesn’t get tougher

The comments are part of an aggressive effort by the Harris campaign to turn the tide on the issue of immigration and border security, long a political liability for Democrats and the vice president in particular. Polls show that Americans believe Republicans are more effective on these issues, a perception the GOP has reinforced in recent weeks by condemning Harris’s efforts on the issue as vice president.

Democrats have generally distanced themselves from the issue, but Harris’ camp has proposed a more aggressive stance, portraying her throughout her career as tough on the border. Harris’ comments Friday were similar to a new campaign ad on TV earlier in the morning that carried a tough-on-immigration message.

“As vice president, she sponsored the toughest border enforcement law in decades. And as president, she will hire thousands more border agents and crack down on fentanyl and human trafficking. Fixing the border is hard. So is Kamala Harris,” a voiceover reads over videos of Harris’ political career.

Why hasn’t the Biden-Harris administration done this for almost 4 years?

Strikingly, Harris on Friday declared her support for “comprehensive reform that includes strong border security and an earned path to citizenship” — a reference to a policy compromise that has been at the heart of all previous immigration negotiations over the past two decades, up until the recent Senate negotiations.

So, amnesty with little border control. I mean, she has to respond to the attacks, but even with the Credentialed Media in her corner, will it help her win new voters?
