——–

Gene Borrello recounted his terrifying experiences on Rikers Island. Borrello described Rikers as a chaotic and violent environment, where survival required constant vigilance and toughness. He recalled being attacked multiple times, having his teeth broken, and frequently having to fight to avoid being extorted. Borrello emphasized the racial dynamics and gang culture that dominated the facility. Non-gang members had difficulty accessing basic amenities such as phones and cafeteria items unless they joined gangs. Despite the brutality, Borrello was able to gain respect from gang members when he discovered he was a member of the Mafia, which gave him a somewhat greater sense of security.
