Tackling financial crime – EIA

We combat this lucrative trade by:

  • identifying and exposing the transnational criminal syndicates that traffic wildlife in Africa and Asia
  • investigation into how the proceeds of environmental crime are laundered through global financial systems
  • sharing our expertise in the illegal wildlife trade with banks and financial investigation agencies
  • campaign to encourage banks and governments to use anti-money laundering laws to prosecute criminals in the wild
  • working with financial partners to use financial information to disrupt criminal networks.

In 2020, EIA partnered with Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) to launch new tools that enable enforcement agencies around the world to use financial intelligence to tackle illegal wildlife trade.

EIA was also one of the five leading NGOs contributing to the Financial Action Taskforce (FATF) report on wildlife trade: Money laundering and illegal wildlife trade.

EIA is a member of the Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife initiative and works closely with financial sector partners to share information and collaborate on wildlife and timber trade issues.

EIA’s collaboration with banks and financial institutions continues through EIA’s Media Monitoring Programme.
