Meridian, Mississippi, once known as the Queen City because of its status within the state, has lost much of its regal allure in 1985. Overshadowed by more affluent cities like New Orleans and Atlanta, Meridian attracts fewer legitimate businesses, including those operated by the near-mythical Dixie Mafia. The city’s rulers, wealthy white Southerners clinging to their privilege, are loath to change the old order.

Real estate developer Randall Hubbard took advantage of Meridian’s economic downturn by opening shopping malls that catered to low-income families in black neighborhoods, until he found himself on the end of a .38 Special. Then, a Dixie Mafia associate named Lewis “Turnip” Coogan, who claims Hubbard’s wife hired him to commit the murder, dies under suspicious circumstances while in prison for the killing.

Former cop turned private investigator Clementine Baldwin is hired by Coogan’s grieving mother to find her son’s killer. Clem, a woman grappling with her own history growing up in Mississippi, braves the Queen City’s criminal underworld as she delves into the case, reopening long-forgotten wounds in the process. She soon finds herself in the crosshairs of powerful and dangerous people who manipulate the law to their own ends—and kill anyone who threatens to expose their secrets.
