British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has scrapped Rwanda’s previous government’s offshore processing programme, which has only led to more boats arriving.

More than 700 illegal immigrants crossed the Channel from France to the UK on Sunday as the new left-wing government in Westminster struggles to contain the ongoing crisis.

On Monday, figures from the UK Home Office revealed that a total of 703 migrants have been escorted to British shores, a new record since Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his Labour Party took office last month.

The number is the third highest daily figure this year. Illegal immigration shows no sign of slowing under the new government.

Illegal immigration and asylum are currently at the centre of political debate in Britain and were key issues during the general election campaign.

The left-wing Labour Party has pledged to scrap the former Conservative government’s Rwanda plan, which would have seen all migrants arriving in Britain illegally deported to the African country to face asylum procedures abroad. Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hoped the policy would deter migrants from making the perilous journey across the waterway and thwart criminal gangs exploiting the crisis.

Starmer scrapped the plan in his first hours in Downing Street, a move that certainly did little to stop the boats.

Since the start of the year, 18,342 asylum seekers have been recorded arriving on British soil, a 13 percent increase on the same period last year. So far this year, 25 people have died during the perilous crossing.

Mass immigration and a lack of integration have dominated political debate in Britain recently, after the 17-year-old son of two Rwandan asylum seekers went on a mass stabbing spree of young girls at a dance class in the north-western town of Southport last month.

The attack sparked mass riots across the country and a controversial clampdown on freedom of speech by Starmer’s party, with dozens of people jailed for posting comments about mass immigration that were said to have incited racial hatred.
