The failure to prioritise Britons when seeking social housing is a concern for local people

A former Conservative MP has said he is “disappointed” by the government’s decision to scrap a scheme giving Britons priority access to social housing.

Daniel Kawczynski told GB News: “I have to say I agree with Lee Anderson. I certainly think when I was an MP there was a lot of concern expressed by my constituents that people, in certain cases, who had broken the law to come into this country, paid criminal gangs money that they knew was being used for other criminal activities, that they would be treated in the same way as native British people.

“I think that’s not the case in many other European countries. I think many other European countries have special policies to prioritize their own indigenous populations. So I’m very disappointed with Angela Rayner’s actions.

“When I was an MP I had to spend an enormous amount of time trying to close a five-star hotel in the centre of Shrewsbury to asylum seekers, because that facility was obviously vital to our tourism industry.

“But ultimately I want to ensure that immigration is no longer in the top five issues in general elections.

“The British are some of the most tolerant and welcoming people in the world. I speak as an immigrant to this country myself, coming from communist Poland in 1978, and all I saw when I came here as an immigrant was tolerance, kindness and hospitality from the British.

“And yet when they see that a large number of people from overseas are being treated in the same way as the native British, when the British have to wait for so long, then that does cause a certain amount of concern and resentment among our native people.”
