Ángel Salazar, of ‘Scarface’ and ‘Carlito’s Way’, dies at age 68

Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in Scar face next to Al Pacino, has passed away.

The 68-year-old died Sunday (August 11) at a friend’s home in Brooklyn, New York. A cause of death has not yet been released, reports Variety.

The Cuban-American actor was born in 1956 and began his career in New York, where he worked in comedy clubs after fleeing Cuba at a young age.

He got his first role in Brian DePalma’s Scar face in 1983. He then played Rico, opposite Tom Hanks in Clashline in 1988 and afterwards as Walberto in Carlito’s way with Pacino again in 1993. Other notable credits include Boulevard nights, SylvesterAnd Maniac Agent 2.

Salazar also appeared on television several times as himself, including in Showtime at Apollo from 1992.

He was best known for his role in Scar face in which he saves Tony Montana (Pacino) in the famous chainsaw scene, in which he is nearly killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).

His character meets a bloody end when he is murdered by a hit squad of drug lord Alejandro Sosa towards the end of the film, his back riddled with bullets.

More recently he appeared in The Latin Legends of Comedya 2006 documentary that focused on Salazar and fellow comedians JJ Ramirez and Joe Vega. He also appeared on a reality competition show Last comic that remains standing.

He would return as Chi Chi in the film The premiere in Brooklyn this year together with Steven Bauer who also appeared in Scar face.

Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that Pacino will once again play a mafia boss in a new kidnapping thriller.
