Mafia: Definitive Edition has been added to the monthly subscription service Game Pass.

The original Mafia title was developed by Illusion Softworks during the heyday of the open-world gangster gaming wave of the early 2000s. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Sleeping Dogs, and Saints Row all revolved around taking the criminal lifestyle and creating a sandbox for gamers to explore alongside a narrative progression system.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is coming to Game Pass

Mafia was set in the early 1930s and focused on the Cosa Nostra, or the Italian crime syndicate that had become hugely popular in film and television. The game also coincided with the hit HBO series The Sopranos, which also explored similar themes of family, power struggles and omerta, the code of silence of the mafiosi.

James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano was an established Capo, unlike Tommy Angelo’s low-born cab driver. Yet both actors did wonders in showing how they would eventually rise to the top of the gang world.

The Mafia: Definitive Edition remaster was published in 2020 by Hangar 13, the same 2K Games studio that released Mafia II and Mafia III in 2010 and 2016 respectively. Oddly enough, Mafia started life on Windows and was eventually ported to consoles. This is a key part of the port and the work Hangar 13 has done to reinvent the classic in an incredibly polished light.

The fictional city of Lost Heaven is the setting for the underworld crime saga during the Great Depression, but it’s still a fun battle for the top with tommy guns and beautifully tailored suits.

The remastered landscapes of the classic cars, rainy environments and Chicago-inspired architecture make for a worthwhile journey back in time. Players who purchase the game as part of the monthly subscription service can also purchase Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Creatures of Ava, in addition to Mafia: Definitive Edition.

Other monthly Game Pass updates include the console release of first-person shooter Valorant, the DLC for No Man’s Sky, and Sea of Thieves: Season 13.
