AfterThe Office The deadline for this story, in which Sabourin alleged that the Canadian Border Protection Agency had destroyed hundreds of foreign passports containing the identities of several suspects wanted by the CBSA, was missed. The agency issued a statement.

The statement did not answer this written question ofThe Office: “Does the CBSA recognise that there are concerns that serious transnational organised crime has gained access to the CBSA’s systems and personnel, and that concerns about fraudulent use of passports and other travel documents by dangerous actors could be undermined by some CBSA employees due to concerns about corruption?”

The CBSA statement said that “Mr. Sabourin’s allegations regarding the destruction of passports have been thoroughly investigated by impartial individuals who have all concluded that there was no improper destruction.”

The statement continues: “It is legal and necessary to destroy identity documents and there are procedures in place to guide this. There is no evidence that these procedures have not been followed.”

And “while the CBSA is aware of Mr. Sabourin’s concerns about the destruction of passports, the agency has not received any complaints about threats made against him by organized crime.”

Spokeswoman Karine Martel also stated: “In this case, I can tell you that the CBSA conducted two separate workplace investigations into allegations of harassment, and that it cooperated with officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as part of their fact-finding investigation into allegations of passport destruction.”
