‘Arco’, ‘Magical Delicacy’, ‘Squiggle Drop’, plus other releases and sales today – TouchArcade

Hello dear readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 15, 2024. In today’s article, we’ll be taking a look at the Thursday lineup of new releases. Perhaps due to the Japanese holidays, it’s a bit smaller than you might expect for this time of the week. Still, there are a few games worth investigating, depending on one’s tastes. After that, we’ve got the new and ending sales for you to check out. And that’s it, because I also have holiday stuff to take care of. Let’s get into those games!

Select new releases

Magical Delicacy ($24.99)

Phew, the description of this game is a bunch of buzzwords. Well, what can you do? It’s a Metroidvania-esque game with cooking elements, and it does try to be lighthearted and relaxed. An ambitious game in some ways, so we’ll have to see if all those elements come together well. Our buddy Mikhail is checking this game out ahead of a full review, so we’ll know soon enough if it’s worth taking a chance on.

Phantom Spark ($19.99)

It’s been a while since the last futuristic high-speed racer, so I think we were due for a new one. This one features over thirty tracks plus support for up to four players via local or online multiplayer. There are also online leaderboards. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but everything I’ve seen suggests this will be another solid entry in the genre.

Arco ($19.99)

Okay, this is good. It’s a turn-based game of sorts, but not the traditional style. More like real-time with pause? But it’s not quite that either. Well, play it and see. It’s a tale of revenge, where your main character is joined by several other people with feuds that need to be resolved. You’ll have to manage your guilt while you’re at it, because letting it fester will only get you into more trouble. Your bow-like Arco versus various weapons, what could possibly go wrong? Mikhail is going to review this one, and I recommend you keep your eyes peeled.

Squiggle Drop ($4.99)

A fun and affordable puzzle game from the good folks at Noodlecake. Each of the two hundred and fifty plus levels gives you a mission of some sort to complete by drawing a shape or squiggle. It gets pretty creative with some of the objectives, which helps keep each quick bite stage fresh and enjoyable. A great way to spend a fiver today.

Overboss ($14.99)

Here’s a digital version of the popular board game, playable solo against CPU opponents or with up to five human players. Your goal as a boss is to build the most dangerous, deadliest kingdom you can in order to score more points than your opponents. Place your tiles, arrange your minions correctly, and see if you have what it takes to become the biggest, baddest boss of them all. An affordable alternative to the real thing that will likely appeal to fans who want to save on setup and cleanup.

Minami Lane ($4.99)

Another buzz word heavy description. Build a cute little street with cute little houses and cute little characters and try to make everyone cute little happy by being a curious but cute HOA-like overlord. No real stress here, just hang out and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. It only takes a few hours but it only costs a few bucks. You could do worse.

Just Crow Stuff ($19.99)

We have a few games now where the premise is to be a mischievous animal doing all sorts of things in human space, and it was honestly only a matter of time before one of them would involve the deceptive god of nature, the crow. Be a crow, make a mess, poop on things, be clever, etc. Just do the crow stuff. Collect shiny things, that’s what matters. This looks cute, and I’m sure if you’ve enjoyed similar games in the past, you’ll love this one too.

The Godfeather: A Mafia Pigeon Saga ($8.99)

I find it very strange that we two games hitting the eShop today that have you playing as a pooping bird. This one looks quite different from the others, though. It’s more of a roguelite affair, and pooping is a central mechanic. Travel through various neighborhoods, pooping on your targets, and avoiding the many factions that are hostile to a wildly pooping pigeon for one reason or another. Well, pick one or both. Or neither. There are a lot of options on the table today.

Arcade Archives Knuckle Heads ($7.99)

Namco is pretty much synonymous with fighting games these days thanks to To draw‘s long and powerful run, but To draw was not the company’s first attempt at this genre. Knuckle heads is a 2D fighter, and its main gimmick is that it lets four players fight at once. It’s a very unusual game in its mechanics, but I suppose in that sense it saves itself from being another Street Fighter II wannabe-also-ran. I wouldn’t call it a high-quality game, but I suspect some might find charm in its quirks.

Space Raft ($9.99)

I think we live in a great age where an indie developer can make a retro-styled game about Milwaukee’s indie music scene and release it on a Nintendo console. That’s an incredibly location-specific theme. But hey, cool. Use your favorite bandmate from Space Raft and go on an adventure that takes you through a bunch of levels full of references that most of us won’t understand. But maybe with this game, you’ll start to understand the steps.

Sale

(North American eShop, US prices)

A small list of new sales today, and nothing that immediately catches my attention. I guess there is no bad day to add a nice compilation like Double Dragon & Kunio-kun to your collection. The outbox contains a lot of nice games, but again nothing that really stands out. Check out both lists and see if there is anything that is worth your gaming money today.

That’s it for today, friends. We’ll be back tomorrow with the rest of the week’s releases, plus any sales or big news items that come in throughout the day. I’m already sick of summer. The cooling season can’t come soon enough for my taste. But since I live in Japan, I have to get through typhoon season first. Humid and hot, everyone’s favorite weather. I hope you all have an exciting Thursday, and as always, thanks for reading!
