Bills legend Jim Kelly claims the QB competition in the AFC hasn’t changed since his time

Jim Kelly has etched his name in Buffalo Bills history as the legendary quarterback who led his team to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Kelly has seen the ferocity of the AFC firsthand, and even after 28 years of retirement, he sees many similarities between the AFC of his day and today.

He believes the competition among quarterbacks in the AFC has not increased. Real changed, as it is still a conference full of powerful quarterbacks.

It was week after week of star QB vs star QB matchups. No matter which team you look at, they had a formidable force calling their plays. And in their day, the QBs did a lot of more than is the case today and they were much less protected than today’s game.

Kelly, who has competed against legends such as Dan Marino, John Elway, Bernie Kosar, Boomer Esiason and Warren Moon, knows what it’s like to compete against the best. He mused,

“The AFC had a lot of great quarterbacks in my day too… I could go on, there were so many.”

Fast forward to today, and the AFC still shines beaming with talent. Names like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers are the stars of various AFC team rosters, and Kelly recognizes the intensity of the competition that comes with it.

“Look at the AFC now with all the quarterbacks they have — wow, that’s a lot,” he added.

Jim Kelly’s perspective is based on the fact that while the names have changed, the fierce competition in the AFC remains the same. The quarterbacks of Today Are ongoing the legacy of greatness left by him and his contemporaries, including the Bills star Josh Allen. And Kelly couldn’t resist praising the star quarterback.

Jim Kelly has high praise for Josh Allen

Jim Kelly knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a legendary quarterback in Buffalo. And when it comes to Josh Allen, Kelly’s admiration is crystal clear. Despite Allen’s rocky start in the NFL, he’s become a beloved figure to the Bills Mafia and even the team’s former greats, with Kelly leading the fan club.

Kelly offered some insight in his relationship with Allen, saying: “I said, Josh, if you ever want to sit down and talk, if you ever want to have lunch and have a beer, you know, talk about a game or even before that, let me know, just give me a call. When I’m here, I’m here for you.”

Jim Kelly sees Allen not just as a quarterback, but as someone who can replicate the level of success he had in his era. He also praised the dual threat’s skills on the field, adding:

“He’s such a good guy, and he does so much for this community, and he’s such a great quarterback. He’s awesome.”

While Kelly acknowledges the harsh comparisons Allen makes to Patrick Mahomes, he believes the difference between the two isn’t as great as people might think. Sure, even Patrick Mahomes had to take a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills before he could finally pull one off.

And to say that Allen is less of a quarterback would be unfair. That said, Jim Kelly not only has the ability but the experience to lead Josh Allen to the victories the Bills mafia expects with gleaming eyes.
