Channel crossings to reach 19,000 by 2024 as new migrants arrive in UK

The scale of the migrant crisis facing the new Labour government has become clear. GB News can confirm that more than 19,000 migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats this year.

This sad milestone was reached on Saturday after more than 450 people crossed the border from France.

During the day, in calm weather, people smugglers operate at least 9 small boats from the French coast.

Border Force intercepted the last illegal migrant boat this evening, taking dozens of people to the main migrant processing centre at the port of Dover.

Shortly after 11am, the Border Force ship Ranger arrived in Dover with the first group of migrants.

The GB News Kent producer counted 54 people taken off the Ranger and escorted to the nearby Border Force migrant facility.

Two hours later, Ranger landed again in Dover, this time with 42 migrants on board.

Half an hour later, the Border Force ship Defender docked in Kent harbour with 135 people on board, believed to have come from three different migrant boats.

During the afternoon and evening, more border control vessels arrived with at least 200 additional migrants.

Due to windy conditions in recent days, migrants were unable to make the crossing. On Wednesday, 107 people attempted the illegal crossing.

In addition to the number of migrants passing 19,000 this year, GB News can report that around 5,500 have now crossed the border illegally since Labour came to power early last month.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer scrapped the previous government’s deterrence plan against Rwanda on his first day as prime minister.

He described plans to send migrants to the East African country in small boats as a “gimmick”.

Instead, Labour wants to tackle people smugglers, but no senior official has yet been appointed to lead the new Border Security Command.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We all want to see an end to dangerous small boat crossings, which undermine border security and put lives at risk.

“The new government is taking steps to improve our border security. We are establishing a new Border Security Command, bringing together our intelligence and law enforcement agencies. We are being given new counter-terrorism powers and hundreds of staff based in the UK and abroad. We are going to tackle criminal smuggling gangs that are making millions in profits.”
