ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:

The current hurricane season is expected to be above normal, with an expected range of 17 to 25 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater). Of these storms, 8 to 13 are expected to intensify into hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5, with winds of 111 mph or greater).

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in the southern Caribbean on Monday, July 1, as a Category 4 hurricane, battering Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tobago. Beryl continued up the Caribbean, making landfall in Jamaica on July 3 as a strong Category 4 hurricane and in the Cayman Islands on July 4 as a Category 3 hurricane.

Beryl has left a trail of destruction across the affected islands. Life-threatening winds, heavy rains and strong storm surges have damaged infrastructure and disrupted transport, agriculture, tourism, health and telecommunications sectors in the affected countries.

At this level, work is performed under minimal supervision. Job holders are expected to produce organized and accurate technical work and reports. They may provide guidance on standard practices to other personnel and colleagues in their area of ​​work.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Providing effective specialist support and technical analysis for policy and programme activities that effectively address food assistance needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive nor exhaustive):

  • Provide technical support and assist in the development and implementation of various activities and processes within the specific work area, in support of alignment with broader program policies and guidelines.
  • Provide specialized project management support for specific and/or defined programmes to ensure that the various activities are implemented within the established objectives and in accordance with WFP policies and procedures.
  • Within the specific area of ​​responsibility, prepare a range of reports and data analyses (e.g. on food aid needs, resource utilization, program status, performance) and highlight trends/issues. This ensures that deliverables meet company standards and quality control.
  • Ensure and/or implement accurate, timely recording of data within the specific technical scope (e.g. aid programmes, food security and vulnerability assessments) and consistency of information presented to stakeholders. Work with internal counterparts to support effective collaboration, implementation and monitoring of ongoing project activities.
  • Coordinate and communicate with local partners, agencies, NGOs and government institutions to conduct accurate food security assessments and ensure efficient delivery of food assistance.
  • Support the capacity building of WFP staff, partners and national government within the specific technical area.
  • Serve as a point of contact for resolving a variety of operational questions and issues within a specific technical area of ​​responsibility.
  • Supervise and/or assess the work of other support staff, and provide practical advice and guidance to help achieve objectives within agreed standards and deadlines.
  • Follow standard emergency procedures to ensure that WFP can respond quickly and deploy the necessary resources to affected areas as soon as the crisis breaks out.
  • Any other tasks assigned.

STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Completion of secondary education. A post-secondary certificate in the relevant functional area.

Experience:

Six years of relevant experience.

Language:

Communicate fluently orally and in writing in the UN language spoken at the duty station and in the language of the duty station, if different.

  • Travel Requirements: The WFP Caribbean Office covers the 22 English-speaking and Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries. The selected candidate may be required to travel from time to time, both regionally and internationally, to support missions, emergency relief, training, etc. As such, a full medical certificate is required.
