Outgoing President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador has accused the US of funding opposition NGOs through USAID programs. Obrador said his State Department had sent a diplomatic notification protesting the funding of groups such as Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), while he would personally write to US President Joe Biden about the funding. The US government has sent nearly $5 million to MCCI since 2018, with private donors including the Rockefeller and Ford foundations, according to Mexico’s Financial Crimes Unit (UIF). However, reported attempts by the US to influence the outcome of Mexico’s elections through its NGOs appear to have failed. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum – who will be sworn in on October 1 – has vowed to continue her predecessor’s policies. The current spat is part of a general shift away from the US, led by Obrador, also known by his initials AMLO. The leader of the leftist MORENA political party has repeatedly reiterated assurances that he will not tolerate Mexico being subservient to the United States. Last year, Obrador rejected “irresponsible” calls from some in the U.S. Congress for military action against drug cartels. “We are not going to allow any foreign government to intervene in our territory,” he said. Mexico’s president last year refused to give the Pentagon permission to track a stray Chinese balloon through Mexican airspace using UIS military aircraft and surveillance drones. The U.S. shot down the balloon, claiming it was on a spying mission for Beijing, despite China’s insistence it was a civilian vessel conducting scientific research. Obrador also accused the U.S. Defense Department of spying and pledged to limit the sharing of military information after intelligence documents on Mexico and dozens of military files were leaked last year. AMLO made it a condition that Biden help his migrant crisis at the southern border by lifting sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela, both of which are Mexico’s trading partners. Mexico has tried to cut imports of genetically modified U.S. corn in favor of boosting local production, sparking a trade dispute. Along with other major Latin American countries, Mexico resisted U.S. and EU efforts to diplomatically isolate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after he was re-elected to a third term. Mexico has refused to be drawn into supporting NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine and declined to impose economic sanctions on Russia. Trade volume between Russia and Mexico rose 9.8 percent in the first four months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023, reaching $759.99 million.

A diplomatic conflict is developing between Mexico and the United States. The conflict is part of a general movement by the Latin American country to escape the dominant influence of Washington.

Outgoing President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador has accused the US of sponsoring opposition NGOs through USAID Programs.

Obrador said his Foreign Ministry had sent a diplomatic notification protesting the funding of groups like Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), and that he would personally write to US President Joe Biden about the funding.

The US government has almost $5 million to MCCI since 2018, with private donors including the Rockefeller and Ford foundations, according to Mexico’s Financial Crimes Unit (UIF).

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), created by former President John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War, has long been controversial as a tool for expanding American influence under the guise of humanitarian aid. The agency has supported media, activists, and political forces abroad to promote Washington’s favored policies and support operations in countries targeted for regime change — so-called “color revolutions” as in Ukraine in 2004 and 2014.

But reported US attempts to influence the outcome of Mexico’s election through its NGOs appear to have failed. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum – who will be sworn in on October 1 – has vowed to continue her predecessor’s policies.

The current row is part of a general turn away from the US led by Obrador, also known by his initials AMLO.

The leader of the left-wing political party MORENA has repeatedly assured that he will not tolerate Mexico subordinating itself to the US.

Last year, Obrador reprimanded “irresponsible“calls by some in the US Congress for military action against drug cartels.”We will not allow any foreign government to interfere in our territory.“, he said.

Mexico’s president last year refused to give the Pentagon permission to track a stray Chinese balloon through Mexican airspace using UIS military aircraft and surveillance drones. Obrador also accused the U.S. Defense Department of espionage and pledged to limit the sharing of military information after intelligence documents on Mexico and dozens of military files were leaked last year.

AMLO made it a condition that Biden receive help with the migration crisis at the southern border by lifting sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela, both of which are trading partners of Mexico.

Mexico has tried to reduce imports of genetically modified American corn to boost local production, leading to a trade conflict.

Mexico, along with other key Latin American countries, resisted US and EU efforts to diplomatically isolate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after he was re-elected for a third term.
Mexico refuses to support NATO’s war in Ukraine and has refused to impose economic sanctions against Russia.
