THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Startling revelations have come to light in the Hema Committee report, with several actresses testifying about the prevalence of the “casting couch” in the Malayalam film industry. According to the report, several actresses have revealed that directors and producers often force them into compromising situations. Those who refuse to cooperate are reportedly threatened with blacklisting from the industry.

The report highlights widespread sexual exploitation, with actresses claiming that those who comply with such demands are identified by code names. The problem is so widespread that many feel compelled to compromise to secure roles. Worryingly, prominent actors are among those accused of committing these acts. Actresses have alleged that criminals effectively control the Malayalam cinema industry.

Women who resist these advances are often labelled as troublemakers, who face serious consequences, including loss of opportunities and threats to their safety. The report states that in some cases, the pressure has even driven victims to commit suicide. In addition, family members of those who dare to speak out have been threatened. It also revealed that, apart from leading actresses, many do not have access to basic facilities such as caravans. The industry, the report says, is plagued by a false guise of glamour.

Details of these practices are documented on pages 55 and 56 of the report, which contains statements from 51 individuals. The testimonies reveal the presence of various middlemen on film sets, contributing to a culture of rampant misogyny. Actresses have reported instances where it is common for people to knock on their doors inappropriately. The report also criticises Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs), suggesting that they exist in name only. Shockingly, some actresses have alleged that not only they but also their parents and relatives have been pressured into complying with demands.
