MEXICO CITY (AP) — One migrant was killed and eight were wounded when unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle they were traveling in in northern Mexico, officials said Monday.

The dead migrant was a boy from southern Mexico. The wounded included Mexicans, Ecuadorians and Africans, authorities said.

Prosecutors in the northern state of Sonora said the attack took place Sunday in a town called Tubutama, about 47 miles (75 kilometers) south of Sasabe, on the Arizona border.

No motive for the attack has been released, but the area has been hit by violence between rival gangs of people smugglers working with warring drug cartels.

Cartels in Mexico regularly demand money from smugglers who transport migrants through their territory, and sometimes attack migrants if they fail to make payments.
