Columbus Blue Jackets trade Patrik Laine to Montreal Canadiens

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded forward Patrik Laine and a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Jordan Harris.

Laine has two years left on his contract and is earning $8.7 million, while Harris is earning $1.4 million and an RFA after the season.

Puck Pedia: The Canadiens added $7.3 million in net cap hit and are now expected to be $1.1 million over the salary cap with a 22-man roster — 14 forwards, six defensemen, two goalies and the injured Carey Price.

They send players to the minor leagues and put Carey Price and his $10.5 million on the LTIR.

Aaron Portzline: Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell: “We want players who want to be Blue Jackets and Patrik made it clear that he thought a change of scenery was best for him. We were able to bring in a good young player in Jordan Harris while maintaining financial flexibility, which was very important to us.”

Thoughts from the media

Renaud Lavoie: “The fact that Jordan Harris is part of that trade is not a surprise. He has been on the trading block for a while with all the left-handed D’s on the Habs.”

Eric Macramalla: “I think it’s great that the Canadiens signed Patrick Laine. They’re getting the scoring they desperately need and Laine is landing in a great spot where he’ll be supported. Win-win.”

Arpon Basu: “Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Laine, Anderson, Gallagher, Armia, Evans: all good photos.”

Charlie O’Connor: “I like the move for Montreal, and if Laine doesn’t work out there, they also have a second-round pick, which reduces the potential downside. That said, I do think Laine is a real risk with that cap hit, and Harris is a decent defender.”

Antonius Di Marco: “In talking to some executives, the key takeaway from the MTL/CBJ deal is that taking Laine at full AAV is risky, but the Habs are in a financial position that gives them the freedom to do so. If you’re CBJ, you had no choice but to move on from Laine; selling him at full value is a win.”

Eric Engels: “Talks with Laine and his agent have been reassuring for the Canadiens. They were one of the few teams that could accept the cap hit, and it came at the expense of Columbus (2nd round pick). Yes, Jordan Harris is moving the other way, but he’s coming from a position of excess.”

Arpon Basu: “If the Canadiens were to increase their offensive firepower this summer, you really couldn’t think of a better term for that contract than two years. There’s some risk in acquiring Patrik Laine, but the term is perfect for Montreal.”
