Reclaim the Night – Statetimes

What would be the fate of that society, where an innocent trainee doctor, after 36 hours of hectic duty, was brutally raped and murdered in cold blood in the conference hall of the hospital by the hands of beasts of our so-called human society. Little did this innocent doctor know that the night of 8th August 2024 would bring such a horrible, terrifyingly painful end to her most cherished life. Something to ponder here is that Sanjay Roy, a volunteer of the disaster management department, working in the same RG Kar hospital, not only murdered that doctor but also tore the spirit of humanity from within.
The doctor’s autopsy report has raised countless questions about the civilization we live in and has filled the heart of every parent with fear for the safety and life of their daughters. It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to explain the situation of the parents of that doctor after going through the details of the injuries on the dead body of that doctor.
It is mind boggling to see the amount of pain Moumita Debnath (the victim) would suffer when the perpetrator attacks her body.
The autopsy report confirmed that in addition to the number of injuries all over her body, pressure was applied to her mouth and throat and she was strangled, resulting in a fracture of her thyroid cartilage. In short, this criminal has exceeded all limits of cruelty.
The question arises here, is there a place in this entire cosmos where our woman is safe? She is harassed, raped and even murdered at every moment of her life. Newspapers are filled with incidents like rape of a minor girl, molestation of a teenager, molestation of an elderly woman and gang rape of an adolescent girl by three or four men. I will not hesitate to call them monsters, who have reduced the entire male community to the lowest echelon of humanity.
There are many other incidents which have made a country like India fearful for women. Even strangers, neighbours and relatives are involved in this heinous crime against naive, miserable and weak girls, especially minors who cannot even resist being born as girls and are also paying the price of being born as girls. Our country is also turning into a country where sexual abuse is increasing rapidly.
Besides the brutal Kolkata rape and murder case, India has also seen the Nirbhaya rape and murder case, the Shakti Mills case in 2013, the Badaun rape case in 2014, the Unnao rape case in 2017, the Kathua rape and murder case in 2018 and the Priyanka Reddy case in Hyderabad in 2019.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), 445,256 cases of crimes against women were reported in India in 2024. These are only the cases that were registered. More than 50% of these cases remain unregistered because people fear the social stigma that a girl or a girl’s family faces after reporting it.
After reading the history of countless cases of sexual abuse, assault, domestic harassment, rape and cold blooded murder under lust by ‘defiled men’ my heart cries with questions. Can someone answer me?

  • Where are we girls supposed to go? Is there a place in this world where we can feel safe?
  • Is it our fault that we are born as girls, or is it our fault that we are born physically weak?
  • Why do some ‘defiled men’ regard women as their personal property?
  • Is the male ego so all-powerful that when he is rejected he must respond in the shameful manner of rape and murder? (5) When will this exploitation end? Why is the male community so vengeful towards women?
  • Why are women exploited at every stage of their lives?
  • Why crimes like female foeticide, dowry murder and minor rape are increasing day by day
  • Why are girls who are victims still waiting for justice? Who will give them justice?
  • Why has male-dominated society been undermining girls’ ego, creditworthiness, self-respect and freedom since time immemorial?
  • Why does she have no egalitarianism and no freedom of choice? (11) Can anyone imagine this world without women? And if not, why is cruelty to women increasing?
  • Why do men with imperfections become vampires for women, thirsting for their blood and bodies?
  • Why does a man always overlook the fact that he was born from a woman’s body?
Our society needs a deep understanding of these issues. If aggression against women continues to increase, our earth would turn into a hell.
