Hema Justice Commission: Exposure of intimidation in Malayalam cinemas

The Justice Hema Commission report on harassment in the Malayalam cinema industry has come up with shocking revelations, calling for strict measures to ensure a safe working environment for women professionals.

The opposition UDF has called for a team of women IPS officers to probe the complaints, while the state women’s commission has asked the authorities for immediate intervention.

“Based on the suggestions of the Hema committee, the Women’s Commission will recommend the setting up of grievance committees as prescribed under the POSH Act on film sets,” said panel leader P Sathi Devi.

The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) welcomed the report and hoped that the government would take necessary steps to implement its recommendations.

“Our struggle for justice and dignified professional space in the film industry is justified,” the WCC stated in a Facebook post.

This is the first time that a government commission is looking into gender issues in the film industry. The members include a retired Supreme Court judge, a civil servant and a veteran film artist.

The report, published on Monday, documents reports of intimidation and exploitation, and alleges a “criminal gang” controls the industry and drives unwilling women out.

The report highlights the need for immediate action given the widespread and persistent sexual harassment in the sector.
