Prime Minister Browne Declares “Fire with Fire” Approach to Combat Escalating Crime in Antigua and Barbuda

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a stern warning to criminal elements in Antigua and Barbuda, declaring that the government will respond with equal force to the rising tide of crime and violence.

“We have more manpower than them, we have more firepower than them. And I am saying to you that going forward, we are fighting fire with fire and steel with steel,” Browne asserted.

During a meeting with border security officers on Monday, Browne reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the concerning trend of escalating crime.

He emphasized the importance of not allowing criminals to instill fear in the population, assuring the public that the authorities possess the expertise, equipment, and intelligence necessary to devise and execute effective strategies against these criminal elements.

Browne called on border protection personnel to elevate their efforts and demonstrate a stronger commitment to combating crime, pledging that any required resources would be made available immediately.

“This is not an academic discussion; this is about taking action,” he emphasized.

He also assured law enforcement officers of the full support of the Cabinet and his organization, encouraging them to act decisively in carrying out their duties without hesitation.

Additionally, Browne urged the police to target criminals traveling to Antigua and Barbuda to commit serious offenses and stressed that the law will be enforced for all, regardless of age, nationality, or status.

He specifically mentioned the need to dismantle gangs, highlighting the importance of developing strategies to disrupt their activities and encouraging members to engage in productive endeavors.

“We know who they are, and we have to target them,” the Prime Minister concluded.
