New Mafia game revealed, set for release in 2025 | gamescom 2024

A fourth Mafia game, titled Mafia: The Old Country, was officially revealed today at gamescom Opening Night Live in the ceremony’s big announcement. The game will launch in 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

It’s set in Sicily in the 1900s, though we haven’t gotten much information beyond that. More details will be revealed in December, likely at The Game Awards.

“Discover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mafia tale set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily,” the trailer’s YouTube description reads. “Fight to survive in this dangerous and ruthless era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for.”

It marked a huge and generally unexpected reveal to close out gamescom Opening Night Live. A new Mafia game has been hinted at in the past, but this is the first official reveal for The Old Country.

2K Games started the Mafia series back in 2002, followed by Mafia II in 2010 and Mafia III in 2016, the most recent mainline Mafia game. Mafia III was also the first to be developed by 2K’s Hangar 13, which also developed the 2020 remake of the first Mafia game, Mafia: Definitive Edition.

Hangar 13 CEO Roman Hladík and Head of Production and Media Tomáš Hřebíček previously confirmed that the studio is working on a “brand new Mafia project” in 2022. Hladik said at the time: “While it’s still a few years away and we can’t reveal anything more at this time, we’re looking forward to continuing to build on this beloved franchise and bringing new stories to our players.”

We’re still waiting on more information, of course, but the setting reveal is sure to spark fan theories. In the meantime, check out our roundup of everything announced at gamescom Opening Night Live.
