2K Games’ Mafia series goes back in time to 1900s Sicily

2K Games isn’t done with the Mafia series just yet, and we don’t mean remasters or re-releases. The next entry in the 22-year-old franchise was revealed at the end of Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live, with a cinematic teaser for Mafia: The Old Country that takes players back to the origins of La Cosa Nostra in early 20th century Sicily.

If you’re getting a Godfather Part II flashback vibe from this, that’s probably intentional. It’s one of the best parts of an excellent film, a period piece within another period piece, and 2K’s own studio Hangar 13 surely has the same appeal.

Beyond that, the details themselves are scarce. We have no idea if the narrator or any of the characters on display are all new, or if they’re joining the Salieri family (2002’s Mafia and the Definitive Edition remaster just released on Xbox Game Pass) or the Falcone family from 2010’s Mafia II.

It’s probably not the Marcanos of Hangar 13’s Mafia III (2016), a flawed but still engaging take on the mafia adventure set in a city styled after 1960s New Orleans. Tracing the mafia all the way back to 1900s Sicily requires these antiheroes to land in Lost Heaven, the series’ original city that had a deep, Prohibition-era Chicago vibe.

Either way, we’ll know more in December. 2K Games said a more extensive reveal will come that month, likely during The Game Awards on December 12, or later in another trailer and with an in-depth analysis from the developers.
