History

Monks and outlaws

KijimiCity-DB

Kijimi City laid on a mountain plateau

Kijimiko(3) was founded a thousand years before Poe Dameron and Zorii Bliss’s time among the Spice Runners of Kijimi.(5) Based around the temple of the Dai Bendu, built with stones quarried from Mount Izukika, the city was famous for its marked spirituality(3)—the Dai Bendu were the precursors of the Jedi Order.(7) The original monks of Kijimiko lit lanterns to counter the cold of the night, and their way of survival evolved into a lantern ceremony about gratitude. The Dai Bendu Monastery received Lorrdian pilgrims of the Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance from off-world, but the Brotherhood was chased off Kijimi by rising criminality, allowing thieves and squatters to occupy their quarter in the city in spite of the Dai Bendu temple guardians. Individuals seeking to evade interstellar law were attracted to Kijimi’s remote and rural nature. The city’s infrastructure was neglected amidst the lawlessness, and dwellers had to improvise heating and power supply, relying on local gangs, guilds, and clans to provide basic services in return for their pledges of loyalty.(3)

During the Imperial Era, Kijimi City had been under the rule of the Ashiga Clan for generations. The dynasty was based around a hive of the Melitto species.(8) Hailing from the volcanic Inner Rim Territories planet Li-Toran, the Melitto were insectoids traditionally organized around female myrmitrices who fought to become queens, and surviving myrmite followers of their defeated myrmitrix became hiveless ronin who generally left off-world and relied on special breathing apparatus. Li-Toran underwent centuries of warfare until the founding of a planetary council to prevent global catastrophe by supporting interstellar colonization,(9) and Melitto settlements were established on several worlds.(10) Members of the Ashiga Clan on Kijimi were willing to sacrifice themselves for the hive, which dominated the city’s underworld. The clan’s grip was weakening when Kay Vess operated in Kijimi City during the Galactic Civil War.(8)

A thriving refuge

By the time of the New Republic, Kijimi City continued in anarchy, having been raided and ruled by various factions throughout its history.(5) Following the collapse of the Galactic Empire and Mining Guild restrictions on the spice trade of the Outer Rim world Kessel, a group of pirates expanded the Kessel Run to Kijimi and became known as the Spice Runners of Kijimi, hiding among the spacers of the city with a den in Thieves’ Quarter. Following the New Republic’s collapse and the First Order’s conquest of the galaxy(3) in 35 ABY,(2) the planet had an estimated population of 310 million, with the criminal self-interests of the city keeping civilization from collapsing. As a general refuge, the city housed typically unscrupulous spacers, yet many of them were superstitious and revered the city’s ancient monuments. City dwellers treated gaps between various groups’ clearly marked territories as safe spaces, including cantinas in neutral blocks in Thieves’ Quarter, though enslavers were not welcome and not afforded any safe quarter in Kijimi City.(3)

Thieves’ Quarter’s most influencial guilds were the Corellian Merchants’ Guild, the Lantillian Spacers’ Brotherhood, and the Intracluster Gatherers, the latter of which had splintered from the Wandering Star criminal syndicate. Kozinarg Trade Guild members also had exclusive access to their guildhouse in the area for food and lodging.(3) While the Dai Bendu monks were long gone, city dwellers believed that those founders had also invented skordu, an alcoholic drink distilled from a fungus growing in icy caves and crevices high among Kijimi’s mountains.(6) Altitude sickness was said to be cured by the popular Ultra-Ox drink in exchange for another, more pleasurable, form of lightheadedness.(3)

Occupation and destruction

StreetsOfKijimi

Thieves’ Quarter, originally known as the Quarter of the Beatific

The First Order occupied Kijimi City, with stormtrooper patrols looking for leads on Resistance activity. They made nightly raids to kidnap children for the Order’s stormtrooper program.(3)

Bliss reunited with Dameron and met Finn, Rey, C-3PO and D-O, and Bliss’ friend Babu Frik reprogrammed C-3PO to translate Sith. The entire planet of Kijimi was then destroyed by a Xyston-class Star Destroyer that was sent from Exegol to signal Emperor Palpatine’s resurrection, but he and his Sith Eternal cult along with the First Order were shortly defeated thereafter by the Resistance and the galactic citizenry.(11)

Behind the scenes

Kijimi City was created for the 2019 sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, and first appeared in the novel Force Collector, published earlier that year as part of the film’s marketing. Kijimi shares its name with a synthesizer from Tokyo’s Black Corporation—director J.J. Abrams is a known customer of the company and can be seen posing with a Kijimi synthesizer in an Instagram post by the company.(12)

Notes and references

  1. According to Poe Dameron: Free Fall, the Kijimi City was constructed on Kijimi a thousand years prior. As events of Poe Dameron: Free Fall took place sixteen years before the Starkiller Incident, as established by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary stating that Poe Dameron joined the Spice Runners of Kijimi around that time, and because Star Wars: Galactic Atlas states that the Incident occurred in 34 ABY, the city must have been constructed around the time of 982 BBY.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary places the events of Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker one year after the Hosnian Cataclysm. As the Hosnian Cataclysm is dated to 34 ABY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, the events of The Rise of Skywalker, including the destruction of Kijimi, and therefore Kijimi City, take place in 35 ABY.
