Anti-mafia investigators seize $100 million in assets in Catania – General news

Detectives from the anti-mafia organization DIA have carried out an operation to seize assets worth 100 million euros from Antonino and Carmelo Paratore, father and son respectively, a statement issued by the DIA said on Wednesday.

“The two lead one of the most important business groups in Eastern Sicily, active in various sectors, mainly in the field of waste management and processing,” the statement said.

“Over the years, father and son have been able to build a real network of companies, diversifying the family’s activities with companies active in hospital cleaning, in real estate and in the management of a very famous beach club on the Catania coast,” the note said.

According to DIA, the investigation that led to the operation began in 2020 and was coordinated by anti-mafia detectives in Catania, who analyzed the pair’s financial activities. The two had already been investigated by prosecutors in the Sicilian city and arrested in an operation called “Pyramids.”

Investigators believe the father and son worked for decades with mafia boss Maurizio Zuccaro, who is serving a life sentence in Milan’s Opera prison. Zuccaro is a historic member of the Santapaola-Ercolano clan convicted of the 1996 murder of Luigi Ilardo.
