Hangar 13 dropped a bombshell at Gamescom with the reveal of Mafia The Old CountryThe new game takes the series back in time, setting the story in 1900s Sicily, long before the events of the previous titles.

This new installment appears to be a soft reboot, diving deep into the origins of the mafia and returning to what fans loved about the series: gritty, narrative-driven crime stories. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, expectations were high, Hangar 13 revealed The old country after months of rumors. The trailer sets the tone with scenes from Sicily in the early 20th century, showing a world full of tension, tradition and inevitable violence.

The game seems to bring back the intense atmosphere and linear character narrative style that made the series popularwhile also introducing a vast open world set in the rugged landscape of Sicily. The weapons seen in the trailer – a knife, a pistol, and a double-barreled shotgun – indicate that this game will be just as brutal and action-packed as its predecessors.

In a press release, Hangar 13 Head Nick Baynes explained that The old country is more than just a step back in time. It’s a return to the core elements of the franchise, focusing on the roots of organized crime.

After exploring different eras of mafia life in the previous three games, this new game aims to tell an origin story, giving players a deeper understanding of the mafia’s early days. With its strong narrative focus and fresh setting, the game definitely develops into a solid entry in the franchise whose last main game was pretty rough.

The trailer was just the beginning. Hangar 13 and publisher 2K have more in store, with plans to reveal more details later this year, likely at The Game Awards in December.

This timing suggests that The old country will be one of the big names to watch in 2025, releasing alongside other heavyweights from 2K such as Borderlands 4, and even GTA VI if it is not postponed.

Before this exciting reveal, the last game fans of the franchise got their hands on Mafia: Definitive Edition, released in September 2020. That game was a complete remake of the original 2002 title, updating everything from the graphics to the gameplay, while staying true to the story that made the game a hit.

Now, with The old country, Hangar 13 is ready to explore new territory in a new time period, while staying true to the franchise’s roots: solid scripting, characters, and world-building.
