Borderlands 4 takes place on a “brand new planet” instead of Pandora, the series’ mainstay

For the first time in the Borderlands series, Borderlands 4 shifts the focus from Pandora to a “brand new planet.”

Yesterday’s Borderlands 4 reveal trailer from the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase didn’t really tell us much about the game, other than some kind of planet with strange purple rifts ripping through space that appeared to shatter the sky of a second planet, and a classic “psycho” helmet being picked up by an unseen figure.

It wasn’t until the Borderlands 4 trailer was released on YouTube via the video below that another crucial detail emerged. “In this next installment of the definitive looter shooter, players will assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they battle through hordes of enemies in search of new treasure to plunder across an all-new planet,” the video’s description reads.

So there we have it: Borderlands 4 takes place on a brand new planet, a first for a mainline game in the series. Borderlands 1 through 3, as well as Tales From the Borderlands, all took place on Pandora. The only Borderlands games that didn’t were Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and New Tales From the Borderlands, but the former was very much a spin-off game.

Right now, we know that Borderlands 4 is coming to PC and current-gen consoles next year in 2025. The new announcement makes for an incredibly busy next year for 2K – not only is Borderlands 4 on the schedule, but Civilization 7 is also coming on February 11th and Mafia: The Old Country is coming sometime later in the year.

The fact that Borderlands 4’s reveal comes just two weeks after the $90 million Borderlands film is being seen as Randy Pitchford’s ultimate “big move.”
