George Floyd’s killer Derek Chauvin moved to new jail after stabbing in prison

Disgraced former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been transferred to another federal prison nine months after he was attacked and stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate.

The convicted killer was transferred to the low-security FCI Big Spring prison in Texas on Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed.

Chauvin, 47, is currently serving a 22.5-year state sentence for the second-degree murder of George Floyd, and a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights.

Floyd, who was Black, died in May 2020 after Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest over a suspected counterfeit $20 bill. The shocking video of his killing, in which Floyd pleaded for help and said, “I can’t breathe,” sparked global condemnation and a wave of protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

When contacted by The IndependentThe BOP said it could not discuss the reasons behind Chauvin’s move at this time, citing privacy and safety as reasons.

However, the case comes after Chauvin was stabbed 22 times in November 2023 while in custody at FCI Tucson, Arizona.

Prosecutors allege that fellow inmate and former Mexican Mafia member John Turscak attacked Chauvin with a makeshift knife in the facility’s law library.

After the attack, Turscak reportedly told investigators he had planned the stabbing a month earlier, targeting Chauvin because he was a known inmate. He later denied he wanted to kill the disgraced officer, according to The AP.

Federal prosecutors said Turksac, who was serving a 30-year prison sentence at the time, would have killed Chauvin if prison guards had not intervened.

Turksac has been charged with the attack and is awaiting trial.

Chauvin’s transfer to jail came on the same day that Thomas Lane, one of three other Minneapolis officers charged in Floyd’s death, was released from a federal prison in Colorado.

Lane, 41, was sentenced to three years in prison for aiding and abetting second-degree murder and two and a half years for violating Floyd’s civil rights after he held Floyd down and restrained him while Chauvin killed him.

The other two officers, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, remain in custody.

The attack on Chauvin was just one of several high-profile attacks on detainees in recent months.

In July 2023, disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar was repeatedly stabbed by a fellow inmate while being held in Florida.

The federal prison in Tucson has also been the scene of a number of incidents, including one in which an inmate tried to shoot a visitor in the head in November 2022The Arizona Star reported.
