Sandip Ghosh of RG Kar Medical College involved in illegal handling of bodies, students fail: Former medical officer

KOLKATA: Akhtar Ali, former deputy director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, filed a case against former director Sandip Ghosh in the Calcutta High Court on August 21, alleging a major nexus between various scams.

Akhtar Ali said ANNI- that Sandip Ghosh was allegedly involved in scams such as biomedical waste, illegal handling of dead bodies, failing students and demanding bribes, awarding unnecessary tenders and running illegal stalls.

He said, “Today I have filed a case in the High Court, a criminal case, that case has been registered and the hearing is tomorrow. I have also filed an appeal in the High Court for my safety and security, because I am also getting threats. And this is a very big scam. Sandip Ghosh has a very big connection which I want to expose.”

“There are many scams like biomedical waste, dead bodies, failing students, taking money from them and giving illegal stalls, unnecessary tenders etc. So there are many such rules and dead bodies are also one of them. So I want the investigation to be done at a high level and he should be punished and this scam should be exposed. Some dead bodies without the consent of the patient, without the will and consent of forensic doctor HoD, he gave them in the workshop,” he added.

He also alleged that Ghosh had been accused earlier but no action was taken. “So there was an inquiry committee against this, a complaint was also filed with the National Commission, PIL was also filed in the High Court but no action was taken against him. He was transferred twice but after he was transferred, he was back in the post,” he said.

Akhat Ali further said that he was transferred because he had exposed Sandip Ghosh and requested the CBI and ED to intervene. “He is a corrupt man and he is like a mafia. When I saw the photographs of the accused (arrested in the case) on TV, it suddenly occurred to me that this man was working under Sandip Ghosh. So I don’t know whether he knew him. But I had seen him with Dr Sandip Ghosh. I have requested the CBI and ED to intervene because Sandip Ghosh is running a huge nexus. It is important to break it and expose it,” he added.

Sandip Ghosh has resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College, alleging that he was being defamed on social media following the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday formed a 10-member National Task Force to make recommendations on preventing violence and safe working conditions for medical professionals. The task force includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin.

On August 9, a junior doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, triggering nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. (With inputs from ANI)
