Mafia The Old Country developer makes statement after language controversy

Mafia 3 is better than Grand Theft Auto 5. It’s smarter, more vicious, has much, much stronger social commentary, and has better dialogue, chases, and gunplay. The historical crime series is less of a GTA rival than ever, but they’re both open-world gangster games. If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick Mafia The Old Countryjust announced at Gamescom, about GTA 6. However, questions have been raised about the game’s language settings after Hangar 13 revealed its new crime sequel, which appeared to offer subtitles or fully recorded dialogue for French, German, Russian, Czech – but not Italian, despite the Mafia The Old Country setting. Now, Hangar 13 has made a statement, clarifying the language options in its upcoming epic.

Mafia The Old Country brings the open-world game series back to its thematic roots. Set in 1920s Sicily, it follows the historical beginnings of the modern mafia, a far cry from the Americanized version of the Cosa Nostra that Hangar 13, 2K, and Gathering of Developers have otherwise focused on thus far. We don’t know too much about the new Mafia game yet, but after it was announced at Gamescom, fans and reporters noticed an apparent oddity on its Steam page: among the list of languages available via both subtitles and full audio, while Russian, Spanish, and others were checked off, Italian was not.

It seemed unusual, given the game’s apparent focus on the formative years and culture of the Sicilian Mafia, but now Hangar 13 has provided some encouraging clarification. “Authenticity is at the heart of the Mafia franchise,” the developer says, “and Mafia: The Old Country will feature Sicilian-language voice acting, in keeping with the game’s setting in 1900s Sicily. Additionally, Italian language localization will be available for both in-game UI and via subtitles.”

Mafia The Old Country Steam Languages: A Statement from Mafia The Old Country Developer Hangar 13

So you can play Mafia The Old Country with authentic Sicilian language and dialect. As someone who always plays the Metro games in Russian, as it fits the atmosphere, the world and the location much better, I will definitely choose this option when Mafia The Old Country comes out in 2025.

Until then, you can check out some of the other best crime games , or maybe read up on the latest news about the GTA 6 release date, which Rockstar is still talking about.
