Sindh Home Minister recommends effective legislation to tackle drug trafficking, mafia

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has recommended enactment of an effective law to combat drug trafficking and mafia activities in the province.

A meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the draft Sindh Control of Narcotics Act, 2024, presented by the cabinet sub-committee.

The draft will be finalized and then submitted for discussion at the next Cabinet meeting for approval. The meeting was attended by the Attorney General, Advocates General and Secretaries of the Law, Excise and Narcotics Control Departments, along with other officials.

During the meeting, the Sindh Excise and Drug Control Secretary gave a detailed briefing on the proposed law, highlighting its significance.

Lanjar stressed the urgent need to draft and implement the Narcotics Control Act, saying its adoption and enforcement would significantly weaken the drug mafia operating in the region.

The minister further indicated that he is committed to improving the process of drafting, approving and enforcing necessary laws, stressing that this is his duty as Minister of Justice.

He urged that the draft of the Narcotics Control Act, 2024 be finalised as soon as possible and all deleted or annulled suggestions be removed from the draft after consideration.

The meeting concluded with a decision to prepare a revised draft of the Sindh Control of Narcotics Act, 2024, with further suggestions and recommendations. This revised draft will be submitted for review, approval and certification.
