CBP agents in Southern California seize $5 million worth of meth hidden in a shipment of watermelons

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KVIA) — CBP agents stationed at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility seized $5 million worth of meth hidden in shipments of watermelons on Friday.

Officers reported finding 2,010 kilograms of meth when they arrested a 29-year-old man who was driving a truck into the U.S. from Mexico.

The truck’s bill of lading said it contained watermelons. However, upon a second inspection of the truck, officers found drugs inside the truck.

“I am incredibly proud of our team for their exceptional work over the past few weeks in exposing sophisticated and diverse smuggling methods,” said Rosa E. Hernandez, Port Director for the Port of Otay Mesa. “As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue to find new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country.”
