SI among four injured in attack by 'drinking mafia'

Patna: Four members of a excise teamincluding a sub-inspector (SI), were injured in a attack by an alleged drinking mafia during a raid in West Champaran district on Thursday. They are being treated for head injuries at the Government Medical College Hospital, Bettiah, police said.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, a five-member excise team, led by sub-inspector Nagendra Kumar, had been sent to conduct a raid at Shivrajpur village in Nautan police station area on Thursday when suspected liquor smugglers attacked them with sticks and stones. The SI and three home guards — Yogendra Prasad, Pappu Kumar Choudhary and Vindhyachal Yadav — were injured in the incident. The Nautan police later reached the spot and rescued the excise team.
Sadar sub-divisional police officer Rajnikant Priyadarshi said an FIR will be filed based on the statements of the injured. “Further action will be taken based on the complaint. Currently, the police are conducting raids at various locations of the suspected smugglers. The attackers will be arrested soon.”
Kundan Kumar Singh, head of Nautan police station, said the condition of the injured officials is stable.
“The illegal liquor stock was buried. The attackers fled from the scene as soon as the police arrived. The identities of some of the attackers have been verified. However, their identities cannot be revealed now,” the SHO said.
