Slotkin encourages strength abroad with strength at home in DNC speech • Michigan Advance

U.S. Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) briefly celebrated her successful bid for U.S. Senate during the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, before delivering a speech on national security and the future of the country.

Slotkin, whose national security career included three tours in Iraq as an analyst for the CIA, serving on Republican President George W. Bush’s national security staff and as acting assistant secretary of defense under Democratic President Barack Obama, said her life in service began on Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City.

“When the smoke cleared, I knew I would dedicate my career to protecting the country we all love,” Slotkin said.

The choice America faces in November is a stark one, Slotkin said, casting it as a choice between withdrawing from the world and leading it.

“(Former President Donald) Trump wants to take us back in time. He admires dictators immensely. He treats our friends as adversaries and our adversaries as friends,” Slotkin said, referring to Trump’s praise for authoritarian leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Oban.

However, the Democrats’ vision for the country is based on the values that brought the country to the shores of Normandy and helped win the Cold War, Slotkin said.

“We believe that America must inspire and lead, both at home and abroad. We recognize that this is not just about a strong military, it is about tackling global challenges like AI and climate change together. And guess what? You need friends to do that. You need friends to do that,” Slotkin said.

“Vice President (Kamala) Harris understands that our strength abroad is inextricably linked to our strength here at home, our schools, a strong middle class and the health of our democracy,” Slotkin said.

She called on the audience and spectators of the congress to be proud of their patriotism.

“Do not give an inch to pretenders who wrap themselves in the flag, but spit in the face of the freedoms the flag represents,” Slotkin said.

“This November, let’s elect a president who leans forward to embrace the future. Because America doesn’t follow. We don’t retreat. We are the goddamn United States of America. We lead.”

After his speech, Slotkin was among the crowd of Democrats and media who were unable to enter the United Center due to overcrowding.

Later in the evening, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson also appeared with a call for the nation to choose a leader who can protect, serve and unite.

Swanson made national headlines in 2020 when he took off his riot gear and marched with people protesting the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. He has been a campaign surrogate for both President Joe Biden and Harris and expressed interest in running for governor of Michigan in 2026.

“In 2020, righteous anger spilled onto the streets of Flint, Michigan. One bad decision from either side and blood would have been shed. But it didn’t happen. We put down our riot gear and embraced the community, and instead of hate, we chose hope,” Swanson said, describing the events.

“On January 6th (2021), the opposite happened. That day was paved with division, deceit and denigration. Police officers were attacked that day. It could have been stopped,” Swanson said.

Swanson emphasized Harris’ background in law enforcement and said she was “exactly the tough prosecutor” he would want to see in a courtroom.

While Trump earlier this week i visited michigan for a news conference on crime and safety, falsely claiming that the country is experiencing a “crime wave” as a result of Harris-Biden policies, despite reports from the FBI and the Association of Heads of Major Cities which indicates a decrease in violent crime.

Swanson responded by saying, “Where I come from, crime has gone down and police funding has gone up.”

“As president, Kamala Harris will unite our country. She will bring us together because our country needs a leader who will take on drug cartels and bullies,” Swanson said.

“In 2020, we were able to turn a protest into a peaceful movement by walking together, one city, one community, and one country. America, let’s walk. Let’s walk. Let’s walk together, and let’s elect Kamala Harris and turn hate into hope once again.”
