LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A former Omaha Boy Scout leader was convicted Friday of attempted sexual exploitation of a child.

John Shores, 55, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, with 20 years of supervised release.

Shores must also pay $7,600 in special levies as part of his sentence.

“I don’t deny what you did to the community in the light, but what you did here was in the dark,” Judge Robert Rossiter Jr. told Shores.

Last year, Shores used his cell phone to chat online with an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Shores persistently asked the user for sexually explicit photos.

On August 10, 2023, Shores scheduled a meeting with the user and arrived at the meeting location in Omaha as agreed.

Police arrested Shores and seized four cell phones found in his vehicle.

When the phones were searched, numerous sexually explicit conversations were found with girls claiming to be around 11 years old.
