Drug mafia uses parcel bus service, police remain vigilant

Nagpur: City police chief Ravindar Singal on Friday said attempts by vendors to smuggle narcotics through bus parcel services are under fire police surveillance. He also mentioned their other modus operandi of using railways as another viable mode of transport. Singal said at a press conference that the city police have nabbed 222 vendors in 169 drug-related cases in seven months, seizing materials worth around ₹4 crore.
Singal, who claimed that his force is on a mission to tackle the drug problem, also said that he had held a meeting for private bus owners and operators to warn them about the legal implications of confiscating narcotics from their vehicles.
“Our special team has been checking consignments in and out of private buses based on information. We have also been equally vigilant over the transportation of narcotics through railways and have intercepted consignments in the past,” Singal said, adding that stricter legal provisions would be invoked against the drug cartels in the coming days. Singal was flanked by Jt CP Aswati Dorje, DCP, Crime, Rahul Maknikar, Addl CP Crime Sanjay Patil, Anti-Narcotics Cell In-Charge Pankaj Gulhane and other senior officials at the media meet.
Singal referred to individual cases of families that were torn apart because their teenage son was addicted to Mephedrone (MD) powder. “Drug dealers and addicts have free access to the dark web for drug trafficking. Various central security and technical surveillance services are working on the drug cartel that operates from their base in the dark net. The free access to drugs in the society is a concern,” Singal said.
Singal said that there were some major actions on the drug mafia and their kingpins, like the recent haul of MD powder worth ₹1 crore, have given some setbacks to the organised syndicates. “We have registered offences against some big fish in the drug trafficking networks and are trying to nab them,” he said.
